Utilizing Compex’s electric muscle stimulation equipment has enhanced strength and muscle development.

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 26, 2010 - Compex® Muscle Stimulators, a brand of DJO Incorporated, recently announced its sponsorship of Team HTC Columbia, the most winning team in pro cycling and ranked the number one team in the world by Eurosport. The international team is comprised of 39 men and women from 17 countries which have won more races in 2008 and 2009 than any other cycling team.

Since the onset of the 2010 season, the team’s medical staff and all Team HTC Columbia riders have been utilizing Compex deep muscle stimulators to enhance their strength and endurance and to improve their training regimen. The team recently raced in the coveted Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, where Mark Cavendish won Stage One and Michael Rogers was crowned the overall champion.

“Each cyclist has their own Compex electric muscle stimulation equipment that they use on a daily basis,” said Dr. Helge Riepenhof, Chief Medical Doctor for Team HTC Columbia. “After a race, Mark Cavendish and his teammates use the Compex Active Recovery program while riding the bus en route to the hotel,” said Riepenhof. “It helps them recover quicker and prepare for the next day.”

DJO, the worldwide leader in the research, design and manufacturing of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) technology through its Compex brand of products, is the first U.S. company to offer consumers an over-the-counter, portable deep muscle stimulator for enhanced sports performance and improved physical fitness. Compex muscle stimulators are used by professional sports teams and athletic training coaches worldwide.

NMES enables users to exercise more muscle fibers in less time by reproducing the body’s natural process of voluntary muscular contractions with high-intensity “optimal” electrical impulses.

Numerous clinical studies conducted over 20 years have proven that when the Compex electric muscle stimulation equipment is applied to the motor nerve, it provokes a deeper and more complete muscle contraction than what can be attained through standard voluntary training or activity. After training with NMES, athletes can expect progression in their overall strength, power and speed, as well as a quicker muscle development and recovery after training.

“We’re excited that Team HTC has incorporated Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) technology into its 2010 training regimen. Compex has helped the cyclists recover quicker and achieve the highest level of performance possible – this is especially beneficial during stage races where riders have to perform every day,” said Greg Houlgate, Director of Sales and Marketing for Compex.

Compex features up to nine specific stimulation programs that target specific muscle groups enabling athletes to maximize muscle development and performance specifically related to their particular sport. For instance, a cyclist can improve endurance, a triathlete can build muscle and increase strength and a volleyball player can gain explosive power to jump higher. In addition to enhanced muscle performance, NMES improves circulation and reduces lactic acid blood flow.
